The Power of Forgiveness, Rwanda is a deeply moving tribute to the inner strength of the human spirit when faced with unimaginable pain. Inspired by the life of Immaculée Ilibagiza, a survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide who spent 91 days hidden in a small bathroom, this artwork captures the profound transformation that comes from choosing love and forgiveness over hatred and despair.
During her time in hiding, Immaculée turned to prayer, surrendering to a higher presence and finding refuge in her connection to the divine. Her story is not only one of survival, but of spiritual rebirth. She made the conscious decision to forgive those who had taken everything from her—including the people she knew personally who had killed her family.
This painting reflects that choice: the light breaking through darkness, the softness born from strength, and the soul that rises above the weight of the world. Every brushstroke speaks of resilience, trust, and the healing force of grace.
More than an artwork, The Power of Forgiveness is a message. A call to let go of resentment, to honor the sacred space within where peace can be born—even from trauma. It is a visual meditation on the courage it takes to open the heart, and the freedom that forgiveness brings.
